Learning Management Systems
Your key to organizing students, curriculum, reporting, and more in a single robust system.
Why invest in a Learning Management System?
Many districts are currently using a combination of Google Classroom and a cache of individual applications to provide instruction. Rollout plans for a more comprehensive solution include the continued use of current systems while onboarding to an upgraded LMS. The benefits of this transition include:
- The availability of full course content, including content delivered in multiple languages
- Assessment suite options
- Student data, including standards-based performance and attendance/activity logs
- Access to a full suite of instructional tools all integrated into one system
- The ability to integrate with district student management systems
- Access to teacher and administrative dashboards allows for easy tracking of student activity and performance
- And more…
Canvas, Schoology and BUZZ are very user-friendly. However, districts moving to these platforms should review each LMS carefully as the adoption of any system involves significant investment of time and resources. Although all systems contain many of the same attributes, distinct differences are of critical importance. Adoption should be after all options are thoroughly investigated.
Please join a scheduled LMS overview or reach out directly to the COL for further information/support.

Initial System Build
The Schoology platform is a fully built, commercial off-the-shelf Learning Management System. Schoology is a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, a 100% cloud-based learning management solution offering browser support for Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox 3.5+, and Microsoft Edge Browser.
By deploying a cloud-based SaaS system, Schoology does not have to build out heavy infrastructure to support new institutional implementations. Once a district signs with Schoology, the district will be assigned an onboarding team. This team will develop a plan that includes technical integrations, roles and permission set up, and system administration training to ensure the district is set up for a successful roll out of the platform.
Implementation: 1 - 3,000 students | $2,000 |
Implementation: 3,000-8,000 students | $4,400 |
Implementation: 8,000-20,000 students | $12,000 |
Content
Schoology adheres to all major interoperability standards and enables a district to leverage third-party applications within the platform, either through our API or by conforming to IMS Global Standards. Schoology is compliant with the following standards: IMS, IMS Enterprise, Common Cartridge, OneRoster, QTI (Question Test Interoperability), LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability), OSID (Open Service Interface Definition), LDAP Authentication, SCORM, XML, and Web Services (i.e. SOA – Service Oriented Architecture).
Schoology also provides over 200 pre-built integrations in our App center. Our extensible platform can support the district’s needs today and in the future.
Schoology also allows instructors to include multimedia resources and to easily access third-party and OER content within the platform. Integrations with such vendors as Nearpod, CK-12 and more allow instructors to add content to their course with a click.
Schoology Learning offers a true Learning Object Repository (Resources). The Resources area is divided into Personal, Public and Group, giving users the ability to organize, collect and store all the materials they have created throughout the school year and the flexibility to share those materials with others. Schoology Learning actively promotes the ability to share these resources with peers, the school, the district at large, and even with the global Schoology Learning community. All types of content, including audio and video files, images, interactive materials and more can be stored in the Resources area.
Google and Microsoft Integration
Schoology integrates with both Google and Microsoft. Courses may not be directly imported into Schoology from Google Classroom or Microsoft TEAMS.
Schoology Learning’s integration with GSuite and Office 365 gives your educators and students all the benefits of Google and Microsoft within a powerful learning management system. Schoology Learning’s integration allows users to easily access Google Drive and OneDrive Documents.
Schoology Learning has an enhanced Google and Microsoft integration, including Google Drive and OneDrive assignment apps, that enables a seamless workflow that allows instructors to assign and distribute copies of Google and Microsoft Documents for students to fill out as their assignment submissions.

This resource contains a wealth of curated content, including role-based user guides, a document center with quick reference cards and release notes, troubleshooting tips, Schoology FAQ’s, and an archive of regularly updated trainings, videos, and webinars. Schoology also provides active community support within the Help Center, with discussions and responses moderated by Schoology employees, and regular announcements of new Schoology features.
Course Duplicating and Sharing
Schoology understands that dynamic and engaging materials are the heart of a teacher’s course. We also understand that having the ability to store and easily reuse those materials is important and can save a teacher valuable time that can then be dedicated to working with students. Some learning management systems force an “archive” process at the end of a term. With Schoology, since storage is not limited, instead of an “archive” process that removes old material, Schoology allows for content to be kept online indefinitely, moving inactive courses into an “Inactive” view so that it doesn’t clutter the interface. If the division allows, teachers can always find courses they used in prior years and copy material from those into new courses.
With that said, we have worked hard to make it even easier for teachers to reuse content from year to year. For this reason, Schoology offers a true Learning Object Repository (Resources). The Resources area is divided into Personal, Public and Group, giving users the ability to organize, collect and store all the materials they have created throughout the school year and the flexibility to share those materials with others.
In addition, Schoology’s Rich Text Editor allows instructors to easily edit and modify content at any time. As soon as you make an update to a course or multiple section-linked courses, that update will be posted.
Student/Teacher Communication
Our solution was specifically designed to foster a sense of community and increase collaboration. Schoology reaches users through familiar social networking communication, group functionality that encourages users to collaboratively design and create materials, and a number of platform tools to increase student engagement.
When users log in, they can choose between a course dashboard view or a recent activity feed. The recent activity feed displays all of the announcements and updates across the courses and groups in which the user is enrolled, making it easy to stay up to date on course and co-curricular activity. Users can reply to posts with comments, audio or video and can even “like” one another’s posts.
In addition, Schoology offers the following tools:
- Web conferencing & Whiteboard - Schoology Conferences allow course and group admins to create, plan, and hold live audio and video conferences.
- Chat - Chat functionality is provided through Schoology Conferences as well as integration with Backchannel Chat.
- Messages - Schoology provides a secure and configurable messaging engine that can connect to external email systems (e.g. Google, Outlook, etc.).
- Announcements - Directly from the homepage, users can post announcements to specific users, courses, groups, or to the institution as a whole.
- Surveys and Polls - Schoology offers a native polling tool that allows users to poll Courses, Groups, and the entire institution or system.
- Audio and Video - Users can upload prerecorded videos and audio files. In addition, users can record videos and audio files directly within the platform as submissions to assignments, posts to discussions and as feedback to students.
- Discussions - Instructors can easily create an interactive course or group discussion which can be graded and linked to learning objects, and aligned to learning outcomes and resources.
- Groups - Schoology Groups provide unique functionality for collaboration outside of the course environment.
- Collaborative Documents - The Schoology platform offers deep integrations with enhanced collaborative tools such as Google Drive, which allows users to share and build content in a manner similar to Wikis.
Project Based Learning
Schoology offers a number of ways to support project/problem-based learning. With grading groups, instructors can group students together and assign each group a set of materials, a problem set and a discussion thread. Using the discussion thread, the group members can collaborate on the project, share materials, and discuss their approach to solving the problem presented by the instructor.
Schoology also allows instructors to easily create cross-curricular projects. Within a course, instructors can create a shared discussion that allows other instructors to join their classes in the same discussion. In this way, a history course and an English course can join together to discuss a novel and the historical context of the novel. The shared discussion enables collaboration beyond the confines of a class.
Using Schoology’s Groups, instructors are also able to create cross-curricular collaborative environments for students to work on projects with other students who may be outside of their course.
For example, if the history and English teachers wanted their ninth-grade students to complete a project in which the students would read a novel and do research on historical events during the novel's writing, the English and history instructors could create a group for all of the students in all of the courses.
Students can then work together using discussions and sharing materials.
Badging
Teachers and administrators can create badges to reward learners and reinforce positive behavior. Custom badges can be created using a choice of shapes, colors, and any image or animated gif.
Usable on Multiple Devices
Schoology is a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, a 100% cloud-based learning management solution offering browser support for Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox 3.5+, and Microsoft Edge Browser. Native mobile apps extend Schoology’s functionality to iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire Devices.
Unlike other Learning Management Systems, Schoology provides a single app to access all aspects of the platform. Schoology Learning’s mobile app extends Blended Learning beyond the traditional classroom. They transform learning into a collaborative experience on any device, anytime, anywhere.

New York Learning Network (Agilix BUZZ): This is a unique, New York statewide powerful LMS facilitated by NYS BOCES, but domains are controlled by local districts. The system is built to house/deliver shared content and services.
All pricing in addition to Nassau BOCES Center for Online Learning, CoSer fee + 15% Administration Fee
Partial District Adoption | $5.50/user |
District Wide Adoption | $5.00/user |
Why haven't you heard about BUZZ?
The answer is simple: Agilix does not employ a sales team to knock on district doors to apprise them of this powerful system.
The best-kept secret in the ed tech market.
Before launching Agilix, the company's founders cut their teeth building one of the world’s largest online communities, Ancestry.com, which provided much of the knowledge base leveraged to launch Buzz, an online learning platform that has allowed Agilix to partner with dozens of industry-leading organizations that deliver innovative learning solutions better, faster, and more affordably than by developing homegrown solutions or licensing a traditional LMS. The company basically works on the corporate level, building the LMS infrastructure for partners such as Pearson and the Florida Virtual School. Agilix joined forces with Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES over ten years ago to launch a project whose goal was to build a domain infrastructure throughout New York State that was BOCES facilitated and locally controlled. The result is the New York State Learning Network.
What exactly IS the New York Learning Network and why does Nassau BOCES partner with this group?
All K-12 LMSs were investigated by a team of Nassau BOCES administrators during the start-up phase of the Center for Online Learning (COL). Final candidates included BUZZ, Brightspace, Canvas and Schoology. BUZZ was chosen for the following reasons:
- Agilix was the most well-established provider.
- Its system was powerful both for operability and student data.
- Cost
- Most importantly, CONTENT
The goal of the New York Learning Network is to create and purchase content and services that can be shared throughout New York State. Since its inception, local BOCES have employed New York State teachers to build content in a manner that they would like to see content provided for their classrooms. With the infusion of vendor content that is editable to supplement teacher-created materials, this provides a strong cache of live curriculum housed within a powerful LMS.
Initial System Build
The Nassau BOCES Center for Online Learning (COL) has already built fully-functional domain infrastructures for all districts on Long Island, including subdomains for each district building. With a single training session, the COL team will train your district tech team on how to bulk import all administrators, teachers, and students as users into their proper domains. Thus, any Long Island district can have access to a fully-functional system ready for teacher training within a 2-3 day period.

Integration with Google Docs/Classroom
NYSNL platform is completely integrated with Google GSuite. Users can easily create new documents, locate and submit already created documents, and use previously created GSuite Templates for submission. All permissions are maintained and updated, giving teachers automatic access when submissions are done. Courses cannot be directly imported from Google Classroom,
More information can be found here: https://support.agilix.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000875563-How-do-I-create-a-Google-Doc-activities-in-Buzz-
Assessment Tool
NYSNL platform has an extensive assessment tool supporting a large number of question types, auto scoring, data analytics, and district wide assessing. The assessment tool automatically rolls up district wide data and allows for individual sums at building level breaks. There are 7 additional reports to export the data for further manipulation by various tools.
Usable on Multiple Devices
NYSNL platform is written in Angular with the latest in Material Design to ensure content created will play as intended on multiple devices. Available to assist in creating responsive content include Content Templates and Assessment Templates. By using these tools to correctly create your content, we believe that it will play well on a variety of smaller form factors without the need of creating separate apps for different operating systems using different coding languages in a hope that they will all function the same. In most instances, the content simply will not play the same via apps as they are not build using the same tools. The NYSNL platform prefers to make the base solution as modular as possible following industry standard Material design requirements and cross platform friendly Angular as our code base.
Student-Teacher Communication
NYSNL platform includes the ability to create emails to different users in the system. We believe there are sufficient email solutions, so all emails go to the email address of record for the user. Discussion boards, journals, and other areas of the system can be used to communicate, especially when used with small or individual groups.
Badging
NYSNL platform supports the creation of domain wide badges as well as course-specific badges. Badges can be granted automatically when the course is complete, when a play list is completed, or when a single learning activity is completed. Badges can also be granted at anytime by a teacher based upon observations and citizenship through the Clipboard.
Project Based Learning
NYSNL platform supports PBL. We have listed the leaders in this space, like New Tech Network, to create the right solution. The platform includes:
- Multiple scoring buckets for each assignment
- Alignment to objectives and over-arching 21st Century College and Career ready outcomes
- Automatic Group Creation
- Group Submission
- Peer Review
Automatic Course Updating
Same as above, NYSLN is uniquely positioned to maintain their content collection just like any other publisher. Content can be maintained by all the publishers who simply release their updates and all licensed users get those updates without doing anything. Maintain it once, and all derived copies are updated.
SIS Integration
NYSNL platform uses a robust API solution to create integrations between SIS and Buzz. Generally these integrations can be automated for course, enrollment, and user creation through a statement of work. CSV files are also supported to create the same course, enrollment and user information in Buzz. We are currently writing the specifications for a more generalized IMS OneRoster which is slated for the end of the year.
Course Duplication and Sharing
NYSLN has established relationship with online publishers. These publisher’s courses can be used as whole courses or individual units or activities can be brought into existing courses. The platform also provides access to Open Education Resources like Khan Academy, Open Education Resources, and other free content.
Course can be easily shared among districts and school buildings so that you don’t have to create things twice. More information can be found here:
